What is Androstenedione?

Androstenedione has a unique background that traces back to the secret inner circles of top level East German athletes during the years when they ruled the Olympic games. The East Germans used a nasal form of Androstenedione to aid in there dominance of the Olympic medals. They used a nasal form because it caused a surge of testosterone quicker. Testosterone levels rose in 15 minutes compared to the 30-45 minutes with capsules. However, it is feared that a nasal spray is very hard on the sinuses. Technically, Androstenedione is 4-androstene 3, 17-dione, a naturally occurring steroid hormone found in meat and in some plant extracts. It is often referred to as an "adrenal androgen" (produced in the adrenal glands) and is a metabolite of DHEA. Both DHEA and Androstenedione are precursors to testosterone, but Androstenedione is only 1 metabolic reaction away from the biosynthesis of testosterone compared to 3 metabolic reactions required to convert DHEA to testosterone. While DHEA can also be converted to other steroid hormones in the body including estrogen, Androstenedione is only converted to testosterone by the liver! Oral administration of Androstenedione has been shown to significantly elevate blood levels of testosterone!

What can Androstenedione help me with?

Usually the blood level of testosterone starts rising about 15 minutes after the oral dose of Androstenedione is given. The peak level (highest concentration) is usually seen between 1 to 1.5 hours after oral ingestion. The testosterone increase will usually last around 3 hours before blood testosterone returns to normal levels. Testosterone is recognized for its potent muscle and strength building capabilities and since Androstenedione is only converted to testosterone, many athletes that
have tried Androstenedione have reported similar effects that testosterone is noted for. These effects can include increased strength, increased muscle mass, better recovery from exercise, increased energy, greater sense of well being and heightened sexual arousal and function. Iy has been shown that androstenedione is a top selling muscle builder when combined with a good whey protein isolate.

Are there any side effects from Androstenedione?

There have not been enough studies on androstene to understand its side effects. However, due to its brief burst of testosterone, you may get the usual testosterone side effects. In larger doses, a decrease of HDL, prostate hypertrophy, and acne are possible with this supplement. Androstenedione is not a DRUG, therefore it does not pose the health risks of anabolic steroid use, such as liver toxicity, balding, gynocomastia, kidney stress, etc. However, it is possible that natural production of testosterone can be affected if the recommended daily dosage is exceeded and used for an extended period of time. If people follow the recommended dosing schedule for Androstenedione, and that is - taken only once daily about 45 minutes before exercise, many of the positive benefits can be had without any significant negative feedback to the hypo thalamus which would decrease the body's own production of testosterone.
