| Multi-Blend Protein Products | Protein blends are essentially made up of a blend of two or more types of protein. The most common types of protein found in blends are whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, micellar casein, milk protein concentrate, egg albumin and calcium caseinate. These protein sources range from fast release (whey protein isolate) to slow release (calcium caseinate). The combination of two or more of these protein sources, allows the user to benefit from sustained protein release over a period of time. This makes a 'protein blend' the ideal protein source to consume before bed or even in between meals, as it keeps amino acid levels high, increases protein synthesis and repairs muscle tissue over a long period of time.
Whey Blends
Whey protein itself has the highest biological value (BV) of any known protein. A whey blend is essentially a blend of both whey protein concentrate (WPC) and whey protein isolate (WPI). Whey isolate contains slightly more protein per serving than whey concentrate, and is also lower in fat and lactose. So you may be thinking why not use a pure isolate then? Well a pure whey isolate product certainly has its place, however a blend of whey isolate and concentrate is a more cost effective way of getting high quality protein to the muscles quickly. The inclusion of whey protein concentrate helps manufacturers to keep the cost of whey blends down, whilst still delivering a very high quality protein that can be used at any time of the day. Because whey blends are 'fast release' they are most effective when the body is craving protein quickly, such as immediately after a workout or first thing in the morning. However, the the inclusion of whey concentrate does slow down absorbtion slightly, so whey blends are versatile in that they can be used at other time of the day, elevating protein synthesis over a short period of time.
