Electronic Cigarettes: Good for You, Bad for Government

Electronic Cigarettes are revolutionizing the health industry. They have combated the health hazards of tobacco, yet the media and many health organizations are trying to label electronic cigarettes as "dangerous." However, study after study is proving that electronic cigarettes are not dangerous. There was very little chatter when the electronic cigarette first stepped on the scene from the governmental and non-governmental health organizations, almost like they thought it wouldn't take off. Once the public became interested and it was clear that the tobacco industry was going to be challenged, the protests began to roll in and their safety began to be questioned.
"The first thing that they tried to hammer into everyone's minds was propylene glycol," says Tiffany Ellis a representative for electric cigarettes. "People began to realize, though, that propylene glycol that is in e-cigarette refill cartridges is an ingredient in some of the things in their medicine cabinet, like asthma inhalers and in lotions. They don't have any evidence that e-cigarettes have harmed anyone and this was even noted by the federal judge in the federal court case against the US Food and Drug Administration. The FDA was able to bring forth not one complaint from the public about electronic cigarettes into the court room."
All of the scientific studies that have been done to determine the health concerns relating to the use of electronic cigarettes that have not been conducted internally by the FDA have proven they are nowhere close to even touching the danger of traditional cigarettes.
"LPD Lab Services in the UK and Dr. Murray Laugesen's Health New Zealand have both concluded from their studies that electronic cigarettes are safe when used as directed," says Ellis. "It's a great alternative to tobacco cigarettes."
What has been proven time and time again is that smoking traditional cigarettes is not only a health concern, but in many cases, a death sentence. Yet the FDA does nothing to limit them, and why would they?

The tobacco industry is a huge money maker for the government!

The estimated income from the sale of tobacco is:
  • Federal excise taxes - $7,307,440,000
  • State and local excise taxes - $15,087,691,000
  • State cigarette sales taxes - $4,764,730,000
The government has become a financial stakeholder in smoking. Why would politicians shut down an industry that supplies them so much money? But, it makes sense that they would combat a product that could eradicate traditional cigarettes and their bottom line.
